Internet Phone

Question for those a bit more tech saavy than I:

My wife works from home. Her employer provides her with an internet phone that plugs into our router and connects to her VPN to provide her phone access.

As is, our options for where to place the modem/router are not the most convenient for her. Aside from running a long ethernet cable or putting in a new cable outlet in a better location, is there any way to work around this? I though we might be able to plug the ethernet cable from the phone into her laptop and use the wireless signal that the laptop is using, but that didn't work.

You could possibly do an wireless AP to AP bridge type of thing.
