"Walk to" fishing destinations

With the recent snow cover, and not quite enough ice to drive my truck out yet,I am walking to any fishing spot for a while.

What are some lakes that have a (fairly) short walk to get to decent fishing? I dont have a snowmobile or 4 wheeler, so i will be towing the sled and equipment to where ever we intend to fish with man power. What are some area lakes that have a short distance from a landing or beach to walk to a fishing spot?

I am not looking for the "magic" lake or anything, just trying to find a lake (on the North side) where I can wet a line this weekend and get some panfish to see the light of day.

I was going to say Island as well. You don't have to pull far at all. There is a sign posted that they use an aerator so be careful. I was there last Friday and there wasn't much evidence of anyone being on that lake so I punched a whole every 20 or so feet and the ice was a good 4-5 inches everywhere I went. I don't know what the snow did to the lake but I brought my cousin out there to show him my new shack and bring him out for his first outing of the year. We didn't get anything on the flags but caught a ton of sunfish. Unfortunately they were all very small, but we had fun for a few hours!

I was in the channel at Chisago today, yesterday and Friday. Today in only eight feet of water. Got Bass, Crappies and Sunnies. Even saw a few Eyes on the camera. Only have to walk out about 100 yards from the access to get on fish. I hear the access at the Dinner Bell is working too. Good Luck

hey songbirds. How was the snow in the channel? Did you measure the ice thickness. I want to get out with my sun and the channel is a great spot for kids. But if the snows to deep or the ice to thin. I can't bring him. Thanks

i think the street is shoquist. It s right turn off 8. then you drive maybe a 100 feet and you'll see the south lindstrom chisago public access sign. You walk right into about the middle of the channel from it.

If you are Hwy 8 heading toward Lindstrom, you'll come to a traffic light next to Brink's Market(Mkt on left). Turn right at that light. About 100 feet ahead is a stop sign, go through it and you're on the access. Just go down the hill. Oh yeah, it's probably a mile or so past Frankies Bait.

I went to the channel on Chisago yesterday. Easy pull. Real slow for us. We pulled a nice 10 1/2 inch Crappie and a Walter. From talking to others the fishing was slow yesterday. Real easy pull though! I lost my rod case with 2 combos in it on the way off the lake though and didn't realize it til I was home. mad

Now I see this - you were in the channel. Probably picked up by someone already. If you want, I can drive up to the public landing and walk around and look for it.

How thick was the ice for you in the channel?

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
