Aerator?

Thinking about getting a small aerator that I can put on my minnow bucket and then be able to keep minnows for longer time. Anyone have one or use one? Not completely sure it's worth the extra money, but it sounds good in theory. I was looking at the Frabill Aqua-Life Portable Aerator, it runs off batteries, 12 volt and 120 volt; and is only like 31 bucks from Fleet Farm online. That way I can leave it plugged into the wall over night at home, plug it into the ATV when I'm on the big ice, or just use batteries when on the smaller lakes.

i use a Quiet Bubbles unit looks like a transistor radio with a metal clip on the back of it to clip on your minnow bucket or pail and it works fine for me. Runs on just batteries so no plugging it in though. I put batteries in it last year and it made it thru the season on one set. I only use it when im on the ice.

In my opinion yes they last longer and it doesnt freeze up as much with the aerator running keeping the water moving. i had minnows in a bucket that lasted me over a month last year with little die off. dont know how much longer they would have lasted as i used them all up before they died. smile

If you are still on the thread diesel, I use aerators 24-7 when ever I have bait. I have a aquarium bubble that plugs in to the wall; done fishing bait goes in the bait/beer fridge, I leave the same plex tube in the minnow bucket switch to the bubbler and run the electric plug through the refridgerator seal; cool and oxyginated; while on the lake/transporting i use the same system as Hardyboy Frabill Quiet bubble, I get about 48 hours on two D-cell. I think I have had a minnows death certificate read "Cause of death due to starvation". Bait is really expensive no matter how you aerate it will pay for itself in one year.

I have a wall unit that used to be in an old fish tank that i had. i use that when at home. when on the ice or in the boat, i usually just use the water from whatever body of water that i am on. the only thing that i do is i buy some de-clorine from the pet store, make new water, and dump the lake or river water on the lawn so i don't transport the water to the next lakes or rivers. it's fairly cheap and fresh water is always good for them minnows.

I use an aerator as well. It's just an old fish tank model with an "airstone" to weight the hose down. I keep the minnows in the garage and the bubbles tend to keep the water from freezing over completely. Works great!

I picked up a Mr. Bubbles air bubbler from wallmart for $8. Works well. If I'm just out fishing for the day I don't use it. Just throw some ice/snow with the minnows. If I'm on a trip to something like upper red and fish out of a shack for a few days, I use the bubbler. When I get home from fishing the minnnows go into a fish tank in the basement till I need them.

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
