Programming new key fob

Just picked up an 06 pontiac g6. Before we left the lot, we discovered that the only key fob there is didnt work. They ordered us a new one. My question is can I program it myself if they send it to me and save a trip to the cities? Or is that something only a dealer can do? The key fob has lock/unlock, alarm, trunk release and remote start. I know it worked when we tested it, but the part that holds the battery in place broke.

Same thing happened to my daughters Key Fob. I just soldered it and its been good for a couple years now.

Google your car year, make and model and program fob- and you will find the technique that works. More than likely you have to jump a lead in the computer under the dash. A paper clip works just as good as a fused lead

I bought one from the E store and it came with instructions. Real easy no jumping anything. Just turning the key so many times and pressing buttons in a certain order. Oh and it was $12..ha

yeah, I've done a couple. No jumping required. Just a goofy series of steps (ie, step on brake 3 times, lock doors, turn to run, press fob button, etc.)

Some vehicles require that you have 2 working keys to program a fob. (my wifes jeep is like that). But it should state that this is what is needed in the owners manual.

Otherwise, I'd just try it a few more times. or look for other possible sequences online.

On the G6 you cannot do it yourself. Either a dealer or a locksmith with the right tools is required. I know because I have a G6 that needs a fob programed and I've gone thru all the goofy steps to try and do it myself. All of the research I have done all points to the dealer, and I hate my dealer.

I hear ya. I've tried all the steps too. I called my dealer and was quoted $20 to do the programing, which I didnt think was too bad.
