Suburban NT20s Heater - Gas smell for about 20 seconds

hibanks1

Question

Brand new heater last year only ran about three times as the year ended fast and it ran with no problems.

Kicked in on today and fan would go then shut off, did that twice then it ran on the third time. Ran it for three hours while putzing around....then while on the floor noticed gas smell coming from the vents when it started up. Took the front plate off and smelled gas as it fired , checked the burner and it is burning blue....and nice and tight....any ideas before I pull it....

Is this Tim?

When the blower starts there is a sail switch that proves the blower.

Next the gas valve opens and the electrode ignites. If I understand you there is not ignition.

The blower should continue to run a short time and shut off. I'd look of cob weds or something at the electrode.

I see your post in the ice forum, it is a bit different.

"Got a Suburban NT20s last year used about three times no problems...went to kick it on today and the blower would go then shut off...did that twice, then on the third time it fired and ran for 3 hours...on the 3rd hour i noticed gas smell coming out of the vents...so took the front plate off of the furnance...kicked it on again, it fires, smell gas for a couple of seconds then it goes away....seems to have a gas smell when first firing for about 20 to 30 seconds. Check the burner through the burner window and it looks good and blue....any ideas before i pull it"

Where are you smelling the gas from. Heat vents or the exhaust vent?

Do you have this vented outside?

it is not tim but if he has a similar problem send him my way

heat vents is where the gas smell comes from and it does light (ignite) and heat. When the heater kicks on blower goes, then the burner lights (see it through the window) then smell gas in the vents for about 20 seconds after it lights. it is exhaust vented outside through the house wall...

didn't do this last year....i am going to check the vents outside really good, then maybe pull burner access door off to make sure the burners are clean...

again, it didn't ignite after the 1st try so cycled the thermostat and 2nd time didn't ignite so cycled the thermostat, on the third try it DID ignite and i ran it off and on for three hours (it ignited several times for three hours no problem)....then was down working on the floor and when it ignited i could smell gas coming out of the inside duct then it would go away after 20 seconds...

well hopefully i just didn't embarrass the Sh%% out of myself, but i didn't smell the gas for the first two hours. I just checked my propane tanks and they are pretty much empty...so gonna fill them and see if that solves it first seeing that it does ignite without a problem...
