What is the best gps for ice fishing?

Anything about the Garmin Oregon 450t that you don't like? I am looking at this one to replace my Lowrance ExpeditionC which has started an unpredictable habit of losing my position. I might miss catching the current sale mentioned above but feel that there are bound to be similar offers in the weeks ahead.

So, you went with downloading LakeMaster maps rather than the micro chip? More flexibility, or cost factor, or what? I was looking at just getting the 450 and then downloading free maps like from gpsdepot, etc. but seeing this latest sale price changed my mind.

Can you turn off and on various map overlays, including the included topo that is the main difference between the 450 and 450t?

So far i haven't found anything that i don't like about the 450T. It's very user friendly. Yes! you have the option of turning on or off various maps. I choose to download the maps because i didn't want order the chip online(i hate waiting for stuff through the mail). I also like the fact that it uses 2 regular AA batteries... their cheap and available everywhere. Only down size to AA batteries is that it only last a day or so if you leave it on alot. I haven't try using rechargeable AA NiMH Batteries because i have so many AA batteries at home but i hear they last way longer.

what is birds eye view, and how much is it? i purachesed lamaster garmin, and when i look at garmis sight it shows something called blue chart.. is this what u are talking about!!! buy the way if u look on HSO-Classifieds u can find them theryre.. i bought a oregon 450i barely used with inland lakes preloaded.. shipped to my house for 225.00... used it on sat for firtst time... ten times better than lowrance i love it

It's basically satellite view... you download the program from garmin and you can select an area where you want satellite view. It cost $29 for a 1 year subscription. it's awesome for hunting... you don't need to mark your trails at all. it'll take you directly to your tree stand and you can see what your surrounding areas look like. Went scouting this weekend and found a perfect spot for deer haunting thanks to the birdeye view.

How does the birds eye view help for fishing? or were u referring to that for the hunters

Referring more to hunting but it does help when you go to a lake you never been to and your trying to find a public boat landing or see how the surrounding areas look like.

I invested an arm and a leg last year in my ice fishing gear... unfortunately, didn't get a GPS, but plan on using the Navionics app on my iPhone this year. I'm spoiled with good electronics in my boat, so ice fishing without GPS was rough!

I used my Oregon 200 last year on the ice after I bought it in December. I did not have too much of an issue with gloves as I usually wear smaller gloves. The cold did not seem to bother the unit at all. I bought the Lakemaster CD so I could view the lake maps on the computer. Also, I don't like changing SD cards in the GPS unit, I buy the CD ROM version of all maps so I can load them on to one SD card. I have plenty of free topo maps along with the Lakemaster and the City Navigator maps. A 4gb card will hold a lot of maps.

With the Oregon GPS you can change the profile to get to different maps. I have a profile for fishing which turns on the Lakemaster maps. I have a profile for driving which turns on the City Navigator maps. I have a couple different profiles for the topo maps I have.

If I buy CD-ROM for my 450t, can I put maps on more than one sd card? Can I view the maps on computer? Do I need some software to view maps on computer?

Thanks!

Two excellent GPS units to watch for deals on, very soon, are the Garmin Nuvi 500 Sportsman (100% Waterproof and very durable), and the Garmin Dakota 20 package. Both great units with a little different GPS utility in mind.

I love the 500 I run and would easily add a Dakota 20 if I needed one.

I had a lowrance h20 black and white with a lakemaster chip. I loved it. However I seem to have lost it. I don't believe they make the h20 anymore. So what are your guys thoughts? Thanks Jimmy

I've got a Garmin Etrex Vista HCx with lakemsater maps, for a few years now works well. I also use it for driving directions.

I actualy have a lowrance H20 black & white gps that I recieved has a gift about 2 years ago. took it out of the package and that was it. If you're looking for another Black & white H20 I'd part with it cheap.

Garmin Dakota 20 was 110 off at the fleet supply so I bought one. Now that I am at home looking at the overwhelming amount of information provided by the manufacturer I am wondering if I should get the "inland lakes vision" from their site or get the lakemaster from their site, any information on the pro's con's which is better etc.

    • Aw, man, sorry to hear that.  Shed some tears and remember her well.  They all take a piece of our hearts with them; some more than others.
    • yes sorry for your loss..  our dogs are always special...
    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
