Howard Lund, Founder of Lund Boats Dead at 91

Howard Lund, who founded the boat company that bears his name, has died. He was 91.

Lund died Wednesday night in his Detroit Lakes home.

Lund Boat Company employs 600 workers and is the largest business in New York Mills.

Lund came up with the design for a small aluminum duck boat in 1947 because he thought it would be a good duck-hunting year.

A salesman for Inland Marine Corporation of Minneapolis spotted the boat strapped to the roof of Lund's car and asked him about it. He asked Lund to build 50 aluminum duck boats.

That led to the creation of Lund Boat Company.

Lund retired as the company's president in 1981.
