Habitat Designation on Northern Lakes

Recommended Posts

MADISON, Wis. (AP) - The state Department of Natural Resources is considering giving some northern waters a critical habitat designation.

The agency wants to apply the designation to Beauregard Lake, Upper St. Croix Lake, St. Croix Flowage and a stretch of the St. Croix River in Douglas County.

The designation is meant to protect fish and wildlife breeding and nursing grounds, physical features that ensure water quality, natural shorelines and aquatic vegetation. Landowners who want to alter critical habitat areas by dredging, installing riprap, and building dams and culverts may need special permits.

The DNR plans a public meeting on the proposal Saturday, Oct. 23, in Solon Springs.
