Youth Starter Shotgun

Recommended Posts

My daughter turned 10 and will be able to deer hunt with me this year. I am looking for suggestions for a starter shotgun style gun. It would be a plus if it could be used for turkey hunting also. Is there also any options for finding use guns or am I better off buying new. I am looking for something that won't have alot of kick to it.

Thanks

I started hunting at 10 with a Remington 870 junior .20 over 16 seasons ago and still use it today for birds and the occasional stalk or drive for deer. It will definitely work for turkey, but it is a bit shorter than most would prefer for the turkey blind. Probably the most reliable gun you'll ever buy and probably the cheapest too. (you should be able to find it for 300 at the max).

I agree.

My 22 year old is still using her 870 youth 20 gauge that she's had since she been 12. She's shot lots of stuff with her's including turkey's. ducks, geese, pheasants and grouse. She's got a smaller frame so the gun will fit her probably the rest of her life. With the 20 guage ammo choices out there now she won't be under gunned.

We picked up a new Remington 870 20 gauge this afternoon. It seemed to fit my daughter much better than a comparible Mossberg. I shot it myself a few times and it is a very nice gun. Little brother (8 years old) was more than a little jealous but I assured him, he would get his in a couple of years.

Thanks for the suggestions and good luck hunting the rest of the fall.
