They are not factory, they may be dealer installed though. The easiest way to check them is to first test the switch and make sure there is current coming off of both the low and high side terminals. If thats ok, trace the wiring and test each circuit with an ohm meter. If the circuit is open the heating element is burned out and will need replacing. If neither side works, its likely the switch or a big coincidence that both sides would go out at the same time.
