No sound on windows xp

Lost the sound on our computer, the icon is no longer on the task bar, have tried a number of things. Might have deleted too much when we were trying to rid a virus, any ideas?

Start > Control panel > Sound and audio devies > Volume Tab , make sure the place volume in task bar is checked. if that doesnt work. go to the Hardware tab. make sure the driver is installed.

Also check to be sure it is not set to mute.
