Auto Trans Flush vs Drain and fill?

Recommended Posts

I'm swithcing all the fluids in my 4x4 4runner over to Amsoil and the last thing I have left is the Automatic Transmission.

I can't decide if I should flush the system or just doing the simple drain and fill.

Flush and fill is great becuase it would be all new fluid BUT I've always heard not to do this because you can cause problems/leaks by moving all that fluid around. I found a 4runner forum online where they describe how you can do it at home by disconecting one of the lines, starting the motor and letting the fluid pump out, sounds risky to me.

The drain and fill is cheap and easy but I'll never have the fluid completely changed out to new Amsoil. Apparently it's a 12 qrt system and you can get 4 qrts out per drain. I could do it a couple times over but each time you're draining some of the new fluid.

What do you guys do or recomend, thanks.

When I switched my Chevy over to Amsoil I used the method where you disconnect the line to pump fluid out and add as you go. It's really pretty straightforward, but easier if you have someone with you to help out. You can tell when you get to the new fluid.
