Jackpine Rob
My son is going to be out in Montana for the next 4 years, and I am looking at purchasing a starter-level fly rod for him. What length/weight rod do the experts here suggest for trout fishing on rivers such as the Gallatin and Madison? I strongly suspect Jr. will be doing a bit of hiking and looking at smaller waters in out-of-the-way places, so what compromises would he need to look at in terms of rod and reel? Thanks! flyfisher03
I would go to a fly shop to help with advice on set-up. I'd also stay away from the cheapies get something in the middle of the road. If he is going to doing some hike in fishing I'd go with a 8-9ft 4pc. 3wt. rod. As far a reels go you don't have to spend alot on them because they are mainly for line storage. so haaad
The Gallatin and Madison are bigger waters, at least compared to streams around here. Fish into the 20" range are not uncommon, especially on the lower sections of the Madison below Quake Lake. I would suggest a 9-foot 5 weight. The Gallatin in general is more wadable and often times has fewer people.
