? about digital multi tester

Recommended Posts

Checking the coil in my wifes van. Book says I can check it with a multi-tester and one of the readings needs to be infinity. Question is, is infinity the same reading on the scale as it is when you hold both the positive and negative leads together. Am I right in thinking this.

yes this is the ohm meter, the "greek" symbol when you are on that setting, and touch the leads together, you should get a zero or up to .03 ohms resistance depending on the quality of the leads. If you get no reading then either you are on the incorrect setting or have a bad connection on the meter. Hope this helps

Infinity is an open circuit. If there is resistance than there is a complete circuit. So holding holding both tests leads together should show 0 ohms which is a complete ciruit with no resistane. Holding the test leads apart would show an open ciruit with infinite resistance. What you are likely checking for is a short between two circuits that shouldn't have any continuity between them in there normal state.
