Late Summer/Early Fall Pike Question

Recommended Posts

I am considering making a mid August to early September Canada trip with my father. We like fishing for northerns and wondered what the fishing was like during that time. We do not like fishing deep and don't like fishing with live bait. Is it possible to still catch northerns shallow and casting for them during that time? And what about size...still possible for some trophies? Any advice or help would be much appreciated.

MNdreaMN,

IMO Sept. into Oct. is primetime for pike and your best time for big pike. I really get cranked up for fall pike fishing, I love fishing the cabbage knowing you are fishing big pike time. If you want just to catch pike, fish the cabbage with rattle traps, mepps #5, just about anything silver is good. If you want to target bigger ones, fish with pigs, phantoms, bucktails, stuff big fish want.

Anyways, Good Luck with your trip.

Fished near Morson the last weekend in Sept. last year and boated 4 pike 37"+ with 2 over 40". Also got 46" and 41" muskies. We were throwing larger baits so we may have ruled out some smaller fish. Great time to be fishing for big fish, especially when you get close to October.
