Learned Lesson About Gear Oil

Recommended Posts

Make sure that it is topped off! I'm about to learn an expensive lesson when the repair shop returns my 1 year old motor. I changed my gear oil along with performing all of the other maintenance last fall. I squeezed nearly all of the gear lube bottle into the lower unit and it appeared full (came out of the top). Apparently not. After my tenth trip out this season, the main bearing seized to the drive shaft.

The repair shop told me that a good trick is to check all of the oil levels again in the spring to make sure that: 1) You didn't have a leak over the winter; and 2) Any air bubbles trapped inside have escaped, lowering the oil level.

I wish that I would have been more careful. I will from now on for sure!
