My favortie stream when I go to southeast minnesota is the south branch of the root river. It is right outside of lanesboro. There is a big Island where the river is parallel to the highway and just a little upstream of the island is a deep slow run that everyone seems to passup. On the wide part of the island is a fast riffle and deep faster moving run. This will produce fish. Then farther down is a really deep plunge pool I have never fished it because usually someone is always fishing it usually a bait fisherman. As you go farther down stream the river starts to get a little more narrow increasing flow and causing a very deep rocky and bouldery run that goes on for quite a long distance. A lot of people pass this up and fish the deep plunge pool but they are making a very big mistake. You are better off avoiding these deep plunge pools where you see all the spin fishermen and bait fishermen. These will not hold the big trout and the majority of the trout. And they are filled with redhorse so avoid the plunge pool. Big fish and the most fish I have caught on the root is the deep narrow long run below the island. The deep slow run above the island. Is where I have caught a lot of trout and big ones. And usually the deep plunges pools have the stockers. Type this in to google maps and it should show what I'm talking about.43.728406,-91.961274. It is about a hour 10 minute drive from byron but on a weekend you should definitely check it out because it has a lot of real nice browns.
