lure epoxy

Recommended Posts

Any advice for the best epoxy for baits is and where I can get it? I used some stuff from the hardware store but it's a syringe and the two parts don't come out equally, which frustrates me and makes the epoxy fall apart. Anything that has two separate tubes would be best.

If you are coating lures with 2 part epoxy, you have 2 main choices. Devcon 2 Ton 30 minute or Envirotex. Do not try the 5 minute Devcon; it will setup too quickly and it will yellow over time. I've only used the Devcon 30 minute, but have had pretty good results. They sell it in a double syringe, and both are tied together so you get equal volumes.

I bought the 9 oz bottles of D 2Ton. I put 2 equal lines on carboard with the resin and hardener and have never had a problem. You do have to mix it thouroughly for at least a minute. Any unmixed epoxy will not cure correctly and be very soft. It will start to setup pretty quick, so I cut it with 10-15 drops of 99% IPA. Extends the open time by 5 minutes or so (maybe 10 minutes total). I can coat two lures at a time this way.

Ahhh, no EDIT. Forgot to mention that some True Value harware stores carry the Devcon. I ordered it from Tower Hobbies online. Envirotex may be easier to find in big box stores.

I get some stuff from hobby lobby here in Fargo. Im not sure of the brand, but it works good for me. I put on two coats. I will mix in a little bit of acetone if it starts to get thick on me. I used to put on a coat of a UV finish also but after doing a few baits with that it did not dry as clear.
