Calm Conditions

Recommended Posts

Looking at the forecast for Saturday, warm, with only a 5mph west wind turning to east wind later in the day.

We had great success last weekend with a good breeze in cold conditions squaring the boat and drifting around wind blown point with just a jig and minnow.

With the calm conditions, I am thinking about using the trolling motor to drag some lindy rigs, both spinners and just a hook and bead with a bottom bouncer, or roach weight. I was also thinking about setting up some slip bobbers with either a colored hook or a small marabou jig or regular jighead. Set these up around downed trees or off the point we had success on last time.

Which techniques will work best in calm conditions after the cold spell this week and warmer weather today and the next few days. Thanks.

Here's a few ideas, which may or may not work ......

If it was windy last time and not as windy this time, the fish might be less active and might be deeper. If you're in deep enough water, look for fish on your electronics so you can pinpoint the depth.

A jig and minnow is a great springtime bait. I wouldn't rule it out for this week. Use your electric motor to move the boat if the wind is not moving you fast enough. Or pitch / cast the jig/minnow, if you're in shallow enough water to be able to do it effectively.

If the fish are deeper and not as aggressive, a live bait rig is a great subtle presentation that may coax some bites.

I consider spinners to be more of an early summer bait than a springtime bait.

Bobbers are a good option too, if you like using bobbers. Since they are such a slow presentation I'd suggest trying to find the fish with your electronics or by other fishing techniques before you hunker down with bobbers. Waves are a good thing when bobber fishing to put some action on the bait.

Hopefully some of this helps a bit. Good luck.

Thanks perch jerker. Sounds like sticking to the plan that worked last week with the simple jig and minnow should still be the ticket, just need to use the trolling motor a little more.

We have all day, so I will figure it out eventually. Got a first timer coming with us, so I want to show him a good time. The beers will suffice for him, but nothing like a fish on the end off your line, and figuring out the pattern. Good part of the fun of walleye fishing. Simple is almost always best.

Good call on the bobber waves. I thought it would be easier to detect a bite with low waves, but the bigger waves would move wiggly down below a little more.

When you are bobber fishing do you tail hook the minnow or hook him thru the beak?

Bobber with a colored or plain hook, or jighead/skirted jig?
