Trim and Tilt Issue

snagger

Recommended Posts

I have a 1999 90 hp 4 stroke Merc. I dropped it in the water tonight and the trim and tilt doesn't work at all. I can hear it clicking but the motor will not engage. HELP! I am supposed to leave for Canada on Saturday!!!!!

Can you hear clicking in both directions, or just one direction?

If it's only in one direction it's likely one of the trim solenoids that you'll find behind the plastic cover on the side of the motor under the hood. If it clicks when you push down, then look for the solenoid with the green wire connected to it... swap it with the other one (with the blue wire). If the problem is now up, that's definitely the problem. Get yourself a new solenoid and replace it.

I presume your battery is fully charged and the connections are tight, right?

If it clicks in both directions it sure sounds like the trim / tilt motor.. I'd try tapping on it with a dead blow hammer and see if that gets it moving. If so, time for a rebuild / new motor, in a hurry it sounds like!

Battery is charged enough to start the motor and run the trim and tilt on my kicker motor. So i don't think that's the issue. It won't move in either direction. Just clicks. I need to drop it off somewhere ASAP tomorrow and see if they can fix by Saturday a.m. I'm sure that will be a challenge.

Thanks for your input.
