Kicker question

Looking at buying a 8hp 4 stroke Merc as a kicker. Currently I have a 70's model 6hp 2 stroke, but it doesn't have enough power in the wind, and doesn't idle down great either. My boat weighs about 2500lbs. I am looking a the 8hp because the local shop has a deal on it. I think it'll have plenty of power to push, but I'm also wondering how it will troll down, say to 1 mph or less. Thanks for your input.

As long as it idles well it should troll down just fine. You can put a bigger blade, lower pitch prop on there to give you better bite and control and slower trolling speed .... it's probably not needed, but it's an option if you don't like how it's working with the standard prop.

You will be fine but I would look for a used Yamaha T-8 or 9.9 1st. Unless your getting a VERY good deal. Every Mercury kicker I have heard was loud.
