I think that the better scope of the two would be the Leupold. However, since you're already looking at a $475 scope, and you're looking at Nikons, I recommend you take a look at the Nikon Monarchs. IMO, they're every bit as good as the Leupolds (I prefer the Nikons and have 3 of them, and love them). And they've got a 3-12 that would work for you, for $400-$430. (I bought my scopes a few years ago and they had 4-12s back then.) Personally, I'd go with a Nikon Monarch.

ditto what troutned said. You wouldn't compare the monarch to the vari x1 would you? The buckmaster is not their top of the line like that Leopold you are comparing it to. I have one leopold and now three Nikons. I think you get same quality for less money with Nikon (maybe better quality actually).
