Converting a fly rod?

Recommended Posts

I just got this old fly rod, that my grandpa got for me from goodwill. I would like to know if there is a way to remove the cork handle and make it into a crappie fishing rod. The other question is that can the reel seats be moved up higher on the rod, so that the rod is like a regular spinning rod.

The other thing is that I have no clue on any of this rod building stuff.

Soak it in very hot water and work it gently. In time the grip will come off and most times the reel seat can be removed the same way. You may end up having to cut the reel seat to remove it. You can place the new one anywhere you'd like. Try to balance the rod with the reel on it. You may have to add some weight in the rear, depending on many factors. Experiment and enjoy. It's pretty easy to learn. Like anything else, when you're ready to do it, plan it out, have everything ready and do it. Hesitation causes more problems than you'd imagine.
