FL-18 / LX-3: a real evaluation

Matt D

Question

I've been seing glowing reports on the FL-18 and also on the LX-3. Both appear to have their definite advantages. But..., I have been reading them all with a grain of salt. Why? Anyone who forks over the bucks for either unit, is much more likely than not, to give a positive evaluation of the unit they just spent hard-earned money on. I've looked at both units in the store and decided on one over the other (an FL-18). If someone were to ask me today which I'd recommend, I'd no doubt lean towards the one I bought; as I'm quite certain most others would do.

I guess this query comes from my science background, but what I'd really like to hear EXCLUSIVELY here is from those who have actually fished with BOTH. (i.e. not with someone else that uses the other 30ft. away). How can anglers really compare their options unless we hear from those who have personally compared them under similar/identical circumstances?

If you haven't, I realize it's still early in the game (LX-3's are new on the scene). If you have, we'd all love to hear from you.

Just tryin' to keep it "cutting-edge"...

Best FISHES,
Matt

Scott O., here is your answer on using 10ft zoom in 10 feet of water. When you are in 10 feet of water and the unit is set on the 20 foot scale, the left hand (zoom) side has half the dial showing 10 feet. The right side (normal scale) is showing the entire water column, 10 feet, on a 20 foot scale, so it is using half of a half of the dial or one quarter of the dial. Now in regular mode with the 20 foot scale in 10 feet of water, the right half of the dial would be showing the 10 feet and should equal in separation the left side of the 10 foot zoom display in 10 feet of water. Now if using the 5 foot zoom window under the same conditions, then it would have better separation than the regular mode.
