Washing Machine Abrupt Stop and SCREECH

stick

Recommended Posts

Our washing machine is currently stopping abruptly and screeching. Almost a clunk-screech. It is stopping the cycles when it's supposed to, but I'm anticipating a failure. Any idea on what might be causing this? Is there an electric brake? Is there a "soft-stop" that isn't working properly? Any thoughts by anyone?

For what it's worth, the make/model is: Maytag - LAT 8234AAE

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Don't worry about it, all of those style washers start doing that at some point. Usually will still work for quite a while. It's the brakes stopping the basket spinning at end of cycle or if the lid is opened during the spin cycle. It's a pretty major repair, as the brakes are inside the transmission. Wouldn't recommend putting much money into fixing that washer, they tend to not last very long, maybe 5-8 years. If you can live with the annoying screech, just keep using the washer until it dies completely.

I had this same thing happen to me on a kenmore- search the goog on washers that have that problem. You can fix it by greasing the brake. You have to take the washer apart, and be a little double jointed, but mine has been working fine for over a year now after that.

I am not sure if the setup on the inside is the same, but it is worth a shot.
