Take me fishing?!?

Recommended Posts

Will be in Boulder March 31-April 6, anyone willing to show a Minnesotan where to find a CO trout? Have fished a few areas around the local Boulder area, Estes, Cheeseman, etc. Not looking for your hot spot, just want to catch a fish! Reply to the thread if you are interested. This request may sound crazy, but hey, you wont know until you ask!

Odonata... I'm from CO and I can help you out. There are enough trout to make you sick in CO.

If you're looking for a quick and easy catch, the hatchery raised and stocked version of the rainbow trout or "stocker" if you will, is your best bet... I'd hafta admit, I'm with the crowd who calls em' slimers.. These are trout that you can catch locally in and around the Boulder area. Man, in the spring time the Colorado Division of Wildlife will stock a list of lakes fairly frequently and it's a hoot especially if you're just looking to catch. Great for kids and folks who are just quickly traveling through.

List of my favorite locations near Boulder to pursue slimers are...

St. Vrain State Park:

Firestone CO

Approx. 30 min drive from Boulder going NE.

Note: Warmwater species fish also available. Not of any size, though except carp. Every so often, they stock brood fish slimers up to 6lbs here.

Barker Reservoir:

Nederland CO

Approx. 30 min drive from Boulder going W.

Note: You will also find brown trout, cuttbows and brook trout here.

Boulder Creek:

Boulder CO

Along HWY 119 going towards Nederland CO. Best section IMO is between Ridge Rd and Barker Reservoir. Just find a spot to park and look for nicer pools.

Note: You will also find brown trout, cuttbows and brook trout here.

Eldorado Canyon State Park:

Eldorado Springs CO

About 20 min drive from Boulder going SW.

Note: You will also find brown trout, cuttbows and brook trout here. The further upstream you go along the road, the less people and better fishing. Had a buddy catch and release a 26" brown in one of those pools last year on a panther martin.

As for anywhere else nowadays, for quality wild fish you may have to go an extra distance... The Poudre River in Ft Collins has some sections with good brown trout fishing. As for holdover rainbows that turn wild and get to the football size, Horsetooth Reservoir is a good option this time of year near the inlet. I've caughttrout there in the 4 to 5 lb range in early march. If you can do some traveling while there, I'd head 2 to 3 hrs out to Antero or Spinney Mountain Reservoir. There are some opportunities from shore here and people usually report of slaying trout of quality size this time of year. If you want some metro opportunitie for larger trout (still slimers), Aurora Reservoir in Aurora CO has some pretty fat trout. The occasional cutthroat will show it's face there and lots of good sized cuttbows in the 12" to 18" range.

And if you're interested in shallow water night time walleyes on suspending jerkbaits from shore, this is THE TIME and I am the guy you'll want to talk to.. For this option, leave me an email addy and perhaps we can do a trade.. CO info for your knowledge of MN cool

And last but not least, if you or anyone plan on going out to CO later in the spring such as May or early June, let me know and I can get you on some wipers (hybrid stripers).

The lakes in the high country are still frozen solid. Closer to town the ice is kinda iffy. Around town the ice came off the last week or two. What 1eyeRed said about the walleyes is true, a few folks have been catching em up to 11 lbs here in town. I'll send you a PM on where to find current info.
