fishnowworknever
I have an older 14.5' Starcraft that says is rated for a 40hp motor.I believe it had a console originally, but now has a tiller setup with a 20hp which is way under powered. Found a 40hp tiller, and was wondering if there would be any difference in the two or any concerns I should be looking into? Thanks in advance.Edit:Guess I should clarify, regarding 40hp tiller setup vs 40hp console setup. Esox_Magnum
If it's rated for a 40 go with it.

primetime49
its easy just look up the classification for tiller boat that year and size and it will tell you hp as coast guard plate is for 40 hp.probaly looking at 30 hp max legal enginethese things do end up being trouble if an accident were to occur.only the factory that made the boat can change hp ratingsnever sell the boat with the motor being oversized if you installed the motorcall Starcraft and see if they could tell you the real answer
7outof10
if its rated for a 40 go with 40 !!!!
fishguyd
Do not cut the plate out. Go with the recommended horse power or less
jigginjim
Always go with the max. hp list on the boat tag. You can't go wrong. I know a guy that removed tag, on an old larson rated for 75hp, rebuilt the transom then put a 115hp on the thing. boat really moved. But try to max to what the boat is rated for you will not be disappointed
