A little more speed pt. 2

After reading DTRO's post regarding getting his sled up to speed, I've been messing with my 1998 500 Trail Touring fan cooled that is new to me this year. I've only put about 200 miles on it. As far as I can tell, the belt isn't running the full diameter of the drive clutch. I'm a complete rookie when it comes to this stuff too.. smile

I did what was suggested in the previous post and marked up the clutch face with a couple lines of marker across the radius. I found I wasn't using the top inch of the clutch. I was getting it up to 65 on a semi packed trail on a pond, it was also pretty warm out (38.) I've double checked and it's the correct belt and new. I actually just replaced the belt and got a noticeable difference from that.

I was running on a pond behind my house, only had about 600 yds to play with, so it might get a little more velocity with more distance and better traction?. Should I wait until It's colder and I have it up on a bigger lake with a nice trail to see if it will use the full drive clutch radius, or should it being using more of it even without top speed (if you're giving it full throttle bursts?)

Also, if it's not using the clutch correctly, but it runs pretty well, is this something that generally NEEDS to be fixed, or can you just live with it? I'm only fishing with the sled, pulling a pretty decent load though.
