Lake Whitefish?

Has anyone ever fished for Lake Whitefish in open water? I'm considering trying this on a lake that has a good population of them. Anyone out there with any experience?

Jbug,
I have caught them when they are spawning in the fall. At that time of the year they seem to prefer a 1/16 oz. orange jig head with a 1 inch white trister tail on it.
I have never had much luck in open water though.
