TPMS?

Recommended Posts

technically it is required by law that if your vehicle has the system it must be working properly or you could be fined.

I don't know about that but auto manufacturers are required to equip new cars with direct TPMS's.

Define the sensors always seem to go bad? Does the lower tire light flash when they go bad? How many have you replaced?

When I say they go bad. They nolonger read or should I say transmitt data to the computer. I can try and reset to no avail. Right now I have 2 that are out they have been out for a couple monthes. I have had 5 replaced/repaired through waranty and an accident. car is out of warranty now.

I think the first thing to do is to see if the sensors are active with a TPMS scan tool. If they are than maybe they just need to be reprogrammed into the TPMS module. I think there is a relearn option on that car. If that is done than each sensor needs to be activated in the proper order fro the relearn to be complete. I have run into several vehicles where the customer has entered this option and it doesn't allow sensor data to be displayed until it is completed. Relearn and reset are two different things when it comes to TPMS.

This shouldn't be a difficult problem to resolve with the proper tools. Its pretty unlikely to have several sensors fail in a short time.

A lot of the GM's can be reprogrammed by entering the reprogram feature. The horn will beep, starting at the drivers front wheel, either increase or decrease the pressure till the horn sounds again, then move to the pass. front, do the same thing as the drivers front till the horn sounds, then the pass. rear, then the drivers rear. You have to start with the drivers front and work your way clockwise till finished. You will have to do it fast. I think it allows you 1 minute from start to finish.

I am not positive if your car has that feature or not. Look in the owners manual to see.

You can do the air pressure trick with most GM's. The sensor is designed to wake up or transmit when there is a sudden pressure change in the tire.

There are no "cheap" TPMS scantools that are worth investing in. The one I purchased was about $500 for the whole kit. Mine will tell you the sensor ID, tire pressure, frequency, Internal tempurature, signal strength, and battery condition (if the sensor has those options).

I just reprogrammed a new HHR the other day. GM will flash the turn signal on the corner of the car they want you to program next. Just some useless info for you to shake your head at. grin
