Walleye and perch questions

Recommended Posts

I stared fishing this one area that has blue gills crappies perch bass and walleyes. It also has some good structure with a inner weed line against the shore a hump and a outer weed line coming off the hump that eventually connects with the inner weed line on one side and ends into some rocks on the the other and a deeper hole not too far away. There is a channel running between the 2 weed lines with a sandy bottom in around 10 to 14 feet. I started fishing off the outer weed line on the inside in the channel in about 14 feet kinda right in the middle between the 2 ends. I have seen everything run through there including walleye and perch. I managed to catch one walleye off the weed line on a tip up with a fathead and a good number of perch a little further away from the weed line. Now my questions are... I notice the larger perch move through right around the time it gets light and dark for a short period, otherwise during the day you catch small and medium perch. Where do the larger ones go during the day? Do they go into the weeds or do they go shallower or deeper? The fish seem to cruse the channel in small schools, besides jigging a waxie what are some ways to attract perch to try and get a few more moving by? My next question is what part of this structure do I want to target for the walleyes knowing there are some in the area, and what depth should I be looking for? Should I just stay in the same area, or should I check out the end of the weed line with the rocks, or should I maybe try on the out side of the outer weed line? Also how close to the actual weed line should you set up? Should you be right on it or like 10 or 20 feet or more away from it? Also if you are fishing right by the weeds or a large rock, do you want to still have your bait 8 to 12" off the bottom or do you want it slightly above the structure? Lots of questions I know, but any info would help this is my first year really targeting walleye and the first year I actually found some perch.

The rocks and weed edge would be good to try. A couple lakes i fish you need to be right next to the weed edge or you wont get any. I very depth off by how clear water is and what worked in the past. Sounds like your in a good spot between tip ups and moving you'll find the spot on spot your looking for. good luck.

Thanks for the input. The water I fish in is kinda medium in clarity you can see pretty good with a camera as long as you have light shinning through the ice, but there is a lot of plankton floating around. I have been talking with a few people out on the ice and they have been talking about how the walleyes are kinda roaming out away from structure lately. So with that kinda of water clarity how deep around the weed edge should I be looking for? If I was to try a little off the structure would I want to go off a ways from the end of the outer weed line or would I want to try some place between the outer weed line and the deeper hole, and what depth would be a good one to start with in this situation?
