Trout fishing newbee

Get up before the sun and start fishing as soon as you can (an hour before sunrise). Trout cruise and suspend so they could be anywhere between the bottom of the lake and the ice and in any depth. I hate to say it, but really you just need to get out there and start drilling holes, if you mark fish give 'em something to eat. Wax worms, eurolarvae, nightcrawlers, powerbait, dead minnows (live minnows aren't allowed on designated lakes) should all work. I caught my first trout through the ice in 5 feet of water and had bites over 30 feet on Friday. My advice would be to drill a series of holes starting shallow and leading to deeper water. When you quit marking fish in one hole, move to the next. You just have to follow the fish and you'll have fun.
