when your not catching any fish. This usually means your in the wrong spot. or if your marking fish but they wont bite, then i like to try to locate the active fish. as for shallow that all depends on species, i'v caught crappies as shallow as 4 feet, where the shallowest walleye i'v ever pulled through a hole was 10 feet, doesnt sound like a big diffrence but the crappie was in some weed cover and the walleye was on a gravel bar. IF YOUR NOT CATCHING FISH DONT JUST SIT THERE, MOVE, DRILL, DRILL, DRILL.

My thing is more time related. I fish shallower in the mornings and late afternoons. "Golden Hours". Then I go deeper mid day. I move when I quit seeing fish for more than a 1/2 hr or so. Unless I know Im on a highly productive spot from days past. Even then I may abandon that spot if its too painfully slow.

Then there are some times where Im just out to get away from the crowds and never set up the house and just bounce around all day. Those are the 20 degree plus days.

I prefer to just punch a bunch and move around. I'll sit over a good hole as long as its going but when the vex goes empty for a minute or two might as well move.

Once "prime" time hits I usually set up over whatever area was most productive and the i'll set up the house and stay there the rest of the night.

If its very cold or windy I'll usually drill my 2 holes in an old spot and do a a lot of sitting and staying warm!
