GottaGo
With the trout opener only a few days away, I'm curious how frequently people change spots when out on the lake. I've only been ice fishing stream trout for a few yrs, but I tend to just pick a spot and sit there all day. I'm normally pretty mobile for other fish, but I'm just not sure if it's needed for stream trout. Am I the only one that thinks like this? For those who do change spots, how long do you give it before trying out a new hole (given the lake is not completely packed with people)? splakeshaker
Thats a good question. To me it depends on my past successes on a given lake. I really don't bounce around a whole lot anywhere, but if I'm on lake where I feel the spot I'm on should produce, I'll wait it out and do pretty well. If I'm not marking anything on the flashers after a couple of hours, it's time to move on. I only use my hand auger when trout fishing. I think power augers spook em away. At least sometimes. They can be a pretty spooky fish. Sharp breaks off points is where I usually target.
fishgutz77
I don't spend anymore than 40mins in one spot and try to hit at least 10 spots when I fish bigger lakes. the smaller the lake the less I move.
