I personally haven't been out on the Ashes, but they are small and shallow, so the ice "should" be more than enough for an atv, and probally a car/light truck. As always check thickness before venturing out with a vehicle.

The lakes are known for abundent sunfish and smaller pike. But there are also some large pike in there too, as well as a population of bass. Both lakes are shallow bowls that get weed choked in the summer, though fishing is still possible.

There is a small amount of current flowing through the lakes (it is the head waters of the Apple River.) Ice on a main part of the lakes isn't effected, but be careful on the north and south ends of North White Ash. There are springs east of the boat landing (north), and on the south end there is a small channel connecting to south White Ash.

On south Ash be careful by the river outlet by Pap's on the west shore, and caution should be taken near the channel on the north end (connecting to North Ash.)

South gets fished harder in the winter and produces good numbers of eater sunnies. Drive down 70th st. about a mile from your road and there is a small boat landing on south. Lots of guys fish just north of that on the eastern shore.

Good Luck!

Don't forget that there are over a dozen other lakes to fish that are under 10 miles away. Big Round is a great winter producer that is just north of you.

UPDATE: Any bait shop recommendations out there?

Thanks a ton, Your're the best!

I was excited to see so many lakes in the area and figured we would be trailering around a bit when we wanted to get after it a little more. It's nice to know there are some sunnies for the little ones (and me) and a chance at a northern.

Thanks again, I look forward to being a good neighbor to the sisters and everyone else out there.

There are a few in the neighborhood. Apple River sports on hwy 8/cty H, Pap's on cty E about 3 miles north of 8, and Jonzy's on cty I just west of H. There is also Lucky's (used to be Gen's) south of 8 on 46 a few miles.

As for advice most shops around here don't have much info. But Pap's would give you the best insight for Ash. They are on the west side of lower Ash on cty E.

Good luck fishing!
