Playing indoors

Recommended Posts

With the recent cold weather, I decided to stay indoors lately and do some practicing with white balance and bounce flash. After reading Dan's tips on setting custom WB awhile back, I decided to purchase a WB card and then also bought a Lumiquest pocket bouncer. I never have been fond of the harsh shadows caused by bare direct flash. Setting a custom white balance sure improves the shot, also.

On this shot of my willing but goofy looking mutt, all I needed to do in PP was open the shadows a bit, desaturate and a little USM. I shot in manual exposure, after taking a reading off a gray card, and set the flash to ETTL. It was shot with a 30D, 18-55 and 430 EX II.

Getting it right in the camera will make life so much easier, less time in front of computers and more time taking pictures! Using proper white balance tools also gets you involved in the some times tricky but important world of color correction! Good for you X!!
