That is great coyote country. I grew up in Luverne and hunted this country for years. Lake Benton - Canby country and north has lots of hills making it great spotting country with lots of predators. Plenty of gravel roads to cruise for spotting too. Should make for a great hunt. See ya there. Good pheasant and partridge country too.

Update: we are starting to get a fair number of teams signed up for this event. Just want to remind everyone that lodging is limited if you are looking to get signed up give me a call at 320-424-1382 so we can get lodging reserved for you if needed.

Lot of coyotes in this area along the MN/SD border and the farmers are very friendly toward coyote hunters as most farmers raise cattle on both sides of border. Any questions feel free to call at anytime.

I was up in the area on Sunday. Group I was with got three. Kind of tough going there were many township roads that weren't plowed or just plowed to a farm site and turned around. The Canby area got little bit of wind to on Saturday night, which didn't help.

CaptainBly,

thanks for the report and glad to hear you experienced a successful hunt. There is a lot of snow in this area of the state bordering MN/SD, and the minimum maintenance roads you referred to are closed for the winter or are not plowed if no one lives along them. You can get around alot of those sections however to call from the other end of the section, depending on wind conditions.

There a lot of coyotes along the border for many miles, and if people do their homework prior to the hunt you won't have much trouble lining up a lot of prime land within 15 miles of either side of the border and running north to south for 40 miles or more. Many of the farmers in this area own land on both sides of the border so if you have applicable licenses you can hunt both sides.

Teams do have the option of checking in in the morning and then returning to hunt in their home areas, provided they are back by the afternoon check-in time.

Out of curiosity, you shot 3 coyotes....how many did you see? For those of you unfamiliar with this area, this is one of the more unique regions along eastern South Dakota/western Minnesota with the Coteau Des Prairie (prairie mountains) running along the eastern edge of South Dakota from the southern tip of North Dakota spanning down into southwestern Minnesota and northeastern Iowa. The elevation along this area rises nearly 2,000 feet and provides a unique and beautiful back drop as you approach from the east.

The eastern edge of the Coteau Des Prairie is gradually sloping and contains numerous coulees and gulches along the eastern slope, providing prime coyote hunting along the eastern South Dakota border, while this area of western Minnesota may provide some of the best coyote hunting in Minnesota or should I say, as good as anywhere in the state.

If anyone has any questions feel free to post or call for more information.

Is this only open to MN / SD residents? If North Dakota resident possesses the appropriate licenses can they participate? I know a few guys up here in the Fargo area that may be interested.
