Actually no on the second question. On my skidoo without electric start I can use a 12V adapter, but it only has power when the sled is running. My gps will switch over to AA internal battery power when the sled powers down. If you want a continuous 12V power source then you need a battery, but you can easily run it dead if you leave any accessory on.
