Bait questions

I do quite a bit of open water fishing, but after just moving back to MN decided it's time to embrace ice fishing. Needless to say, I'm excited about the opportunity to extend the fishing season and spend some time outside this winter!

Being new to ice fishing, I have a few questions I could use help with:

1. It sounds like most people use live bait with tip up's for Northern or 'Eyes. In general, what kind of size do you shoot for? Everything in ice fishing seems to be smaller, but I've heard of people using 6" chubs for live bait under tip ups. Also, I've heard of people using frozen smelt with success. Anyone know of online shops where you can buy these?

2. Anyone used the packaged/preserved baits?

3. Do the gulp minnows work well under tip ups?

4. In open water, I'd normally pair my minnow up with a jig (as opposed to a plain hook). Same thing here?

5. I picked up a jar of the Gulp white maggots for panfish. Are these on par with live waxies (in general)?

Thanks for any ideas and pointers. I have a lot of work ahead mapping out some lakes and trying to find a few spots to start on. Looking forward to getting out there!

Also, I know I'll probably come up dry here, but if anyone would be willing to send a PM with pointers on any "starter lakes" within an hour of the metro I would definitely appreciate it!
