The first find weighs in at 2 pounds. It has a Limonite yellow Orange husk: (probably an admix of Hematite and Goethite) and along it's rind are pocked out indents that give a florid mossy look of an Opal white, with freckles of blue and hints of an Eggplant Purple. Furthermore: there is one spalled away spot on the nodule that shows a pitchy Purple Chalcedony with a standout Opaline braille - pretty nifty! How I came to find this is: that I had been tipped off on a good prospecting area in Springfield Ohio and literally about five minutes (on said shelf in Springfield) I saw this large nodule "just jutting out like a Pikey in an English pub." I didn't need HD vision to see it! Man did I have a gala trip, perfect weather that day and I found a bunch of other silicified material and two would be Agate types as well: one white and brecciated, and the other a Gnarled Greenish/Orangey Yellow. But yeah I believe this nodule to be a Jaspagate: it has a rather opaque look to it, but has peckings of different colors like Moss Agates - and is translucent in spots.

Next up is a smaller palm sized nodule - which has a full sweep of colors!Green,Grey,Yellow,Red,Pink,Orange,Purple,White and Brown - a chameleon of a nodule. This particular nodule I happened to trod past a few times (believe it or not) I was in an area that I had pulled up on Google Earth and decided to give it a run. It turned out the area was a capital spot... it's just that Caliche had taken over a surplus of the stones at the lip of the river and you had really leaf around on all-fours like a dog to find anything. Here's what I culled up!

It seems to me that Ohio needs to "UPDATE" their mineral census; as far as I know I am the only gent repping Agate/Agate Material from Ohio on the whole World Wide Web!

Hello Dark: Nope I haven't been using any Cerium or Diamond Grit "their all in the rough"; though I could get some felt wheel's to do it, or just make do with an old spitshine rag...lol. But yeah, no face painting as of yet; I've heard that if you keep a Agate nodule in mint from an area where that mineral type is elusive or unlisted it's lucre stands to be higher. I guess there's something about Sedimentary Agates being like Wild Cards in the Agate world or harder game to come by? Then again some people balk at cutting Agates with Fortification banding, Shadow Banding, or skin deep patterns that boost the Agate's face-value; those are the more onliest ones A.K.A. the Topshelfer's. Speaking of Agate's, I might have come across some Michigan shake a while back (that I've been sitting on): a palm sized iron rich Agate that is nearly as Red as a Red hot candy. It has a greenish-red core with a White-Blue-Green banding surrounding it with splotches of Red seeping into the bands and it's primary color is Blue-Grey & Red.

Additionally: I'm setting up a spot in my house that has descent natural lighting and then I'll share the smaller end Agate's I've come across - the possible Laker included.

Ps. Since you're a Laker die hard I thought I'd give you a link to this guys Upland Michigan stash; I don't know if you've seen Laker's matrix-bound before - but here they are!

Also check out these Laker's: (http://www.flickr.com/photos/27221617@N03/sets/72157616481096400/) the Jet Black (3rd Image) one and the Neon Red Brown one (2nd Image) are amazing.

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
