Question for Lou . . . (OK, OK, for everyone!)

Recommended Posts

I have alot of feelings of how we are handling the whitetail deer in our state and in our state of mind and I have no idea where it is going to take us in the future.

It may put us up there with Iowa, Kansas, Illinois for rack size, we may be getting there, heck we may be there and past them.

What it may do, I have no idea, but land issues could become a factor, purchasing, permission, etc. Could take the average hunter out of the equation.

One of those be careful what you wish for things.

I have some nieghbors where I hunt. If you saw this crew hunt a few years ago you never would believe it, but today they are practicing QDM. Things are changing without state-mandated QDM.

I support the baiting ban because I believe it helps keep the big time outfitter and land leasing out of the state. If bigger deer get grown it will force some people off of land that they are hunting now.

There are alot of things the MN could do to improve the quality of our deer. Like others have said we can have monster deer just like anyone else, but they get shot before they have a chance.

I would not want a 8pt min, as that will only get them to that point before getting shot. Granted it would allow few more to get bigger.

There is no reason that MN couldn't go to a draw system like ND. We want to control numbers than shoot does. They seem to have it all over there. People that only want bucks will have to wait until they get drawn or and the ones who want meat can go and shoot a doe.

Giving everyone the chance to chase deer during the muzzleloader season is another bad idea. The deer are more wise, but the bucks are run down and don't need to be pushed around anymore. We had it right to only be allowed to hunt one firearm season. But that could also be a draw system.

The DNR is allowing us to buy 3 types of tags to get more money. The all season tag was fine, mostly because you got one buck tag only.

There are people that think because they get three buck tags they can use them. They either don't register the deer or call is a doe.

Yeah its great to let anyone hunt all three seasons for that one buck. But that right there puts alot more pressure on the deer.

Lastly going to the nine day season and rifle's has really hurt the hunting in our area. We are somewhat on the prarie and in the last years of rifles and nine day season has really knocked out the deer. It was fine to get rid of some does, but its getting to the point of not finding many and we have some prime stuff.

The Dnr needs to manage both numbers and population, but do it without hurting both. I could care less of the numbers that we kill, but would like to shoot a doe or two and have a chance at a decent buck.

Probly missed something but need to get out hunting.

expanding on what has been said here, i'm interested in how the DNR could better utiilze web resources such as social media sites and outdoor forums to interact with the public, as well as recruit young outdoors-people.

It certainly is awesome that Lou comes on this forum and represents both himself and the DNR. I wonder about the possibility of Parks and Trails or Eco Resources staff doing similar stuff
