Diver setup help

I am new to diver hunting and hope to get so good insight on a good decoy set up. Got about a dozen and a half old diver decoys from a buddy. Nothing pretty, a little of this and a little of that. I have been told you want to set them up in a J pattern. Do you put the hook into the wind? How deep of water should you be in, how long of a line should you make before you start your hook. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
