So a related (but somewhat unrelated) question related to my earlier Milaca question. A primary goal of mine in the near term is to hunt some divers (and puddlers)on bigger water. In that spirit I have been in the market for a boat suitable for hunting and fishing as well. Considering a 17' modified V on HSO-Classifieds. Also looking at a 35 hp outboard and boat blind. I have plent of decoys, would this rig handle Mille Lacs though? If yes I am thinking of trading the canoe trip for my real goal, a hunt on bigger water. Thanks

It all depends on how you distribute the weight and how much weight you have in it. Also, If you get too big it's tough to hide it. Let common sense prevail if you can't get out in a 17 footer is a 20 footer going to be that much safer so you can go out? If it's cheap and you can use it as a duck boat only, Go for it. I have heard that sea duck guides on the east coast use Lowe 1677's for their hunting.

tylor that should be plenty of boat for the big pond the biggest thing is common sense when hunting big water. Useing Life jackets is a must when hunting big water and make sure you have a on board fire extingisher (thats the law) dont overload the boat and you should be fine.

\If it works out and I'm back from my deer hunt early maybe I could show you a bit about the dead sea I have had alot of fun late season up there. We could use my boat it is a 18ft lowe mod vee flat and it all set up for hunting

Thanks both for the input. I am going to call on the boat and motor today and if both are available at a decent price i might pull the trigger. Elwood - let me know anytime - getting out on big water is something I have been hoping to do and from what I have heard having someone who knows the rope around the first time might not be a bad idea. well i got the boat but missed out on the motor. we ended up hunting on onamia using my canoe on monday and tuesday. There were very few birds flying but we managed to kill most of what we saw and ended up with 7 mallards and a couple of nice geese. to my surprise we didn't see a single diver. On a related note - how do i post pics here? I am currently looking to find a motor in the 25-40hp range and we are planning another trip to break in the boat over thanksgiving weekend. any suggestions would be appreciated. we are considering Swan or Leech. Would likely be camping - we camped in Onamia and were fine in 25 degrees at night, though an insulated or at least canvas tent is definitely in the plans eventually. Not sure if we can hunt swan with an outboard or need a mud motor?
