2000 GMC Jimmy fuel pump

Recommended Posts

I am thinking that I need a new fuel pump. The gas gauge is broke so I always fill up based on the number of miles I have driven. Saturday when we were leaving the lake after duck hunting the truck would not start. Had some one bring out some gas and put that it still no go. It was then that I turned the key and noticed that I did not hear the familiar noise of the fuel pump. There are no engine codes that my code reader will pick up.

Guessing that the thing is in the fuel tank so my plan is to drop tank, look for 12V at the pump and if it is there the pump is bad if not I have some other problem. Does that sound about right to you guys? Also is the pump and fuel gauge sender unit 1 unit in there? I guess I may as well fix the sender unit as long as I have it apart! Any ball park figures I am looking at for prices? Thanks and have a great day! Take care and N Joy the Hunt././Jimbo

PS the hunt was good (there is no bad hunt is there?)but we discovered some things that made the hunt on Sunday fantastic!!!

sounds like the pump. you have a couple options, one is to drop the tank and replace pump that way, the other way is to remove the bed bolts and move it over to the side so you can access the tank. you can figure on a couple hundred bucks for a pump, i would stay away from aftermarket. but if that is your choice at least do napa. compare the prices between oem and napa. my 04 dodge has had 3 pumps because of the sending unit( all under extended warranty). good luck.

What do you mean you lost 3 pumps due to the sending unit? I am not follwoing? Thanks! Take care and N Joy the Hunt././Jimbo

The older metal sending units had issues with the internal connector burning up. They would act like a bad fuel pump but the pump was not getting any power. Once you removed the sending unit and replaced the pump the connector on the inside would get jarred around enough to make a good enough contact to get the pump to work but would eventually heat up and go bad starting the whole cycle over again.

The fuel pump on your vehicle is a module assembly. The pump itself is not serviceable and requires the replacement of the entire module so you will not have the internal connector issue.

If yours has a square plug at the module there can still be burnt up pins

Some of these style pumps have been updated to an oval plug. If yours is one you will receive the oval plug and pigtail in the box with the new module.

Get at least a Delphi pump if you go aftermarket. You can expect about $375 at your local NAPA.

Thanks for the info! There is a wide range of pump prices out there ranging from #374.00 down to $138.00 from the scrap yard. Since I do not intend to keep the truck past spring I am going with the scrap yard one. I will take note on the connectors and insure that they are making a good contact. Should I put some white lithium grease with them to prevent any corrosion? Thanks and have a good one././Jimbo

Di-Electric grease would be a better choice.

Oppps, yeah that is what I meant. Mama brought the used pump home last night and the connections on it look real clean so I am hoping that when I get mine apart they will be clean as well. Thanks for all the tips guys! Take care and N Joy the Hunt././Jimbo

Well it was definitely not fun! Got the “new” pump in and the truck starts just fine. The new pump is a lot quieter than the old one was. However comma pause for effect the gas gauge is still all messed up! Oh well I have been dealing with that for over a year now so I am not to concerned about it. Thanks for the help guys… any thoughts on the gas gauge? Take care and N Joy the Hunt././Jimbo

Clarification. My dodge has had 4 pumps now. What happens is when i fill up the gauge will come up to half and take anywhere from 5 miles to 100 miles to show full. Dodge has had some issues with sending units that are part of the pump. Knock on wood this one has been in for a while now and no problems showing, extended warranty runs out in april. hope that cleared it up. jeff

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
