Which Weekend to Duck Hunt

Recommended Posts

I am hitting ND again this years for ducks and can go any week this fall. We always go either Around the 10th to 15th of October. For those who have hunted different times of the month when seems to be the best. Obviously it depends on the weather more than anything for the migration. But if you were going to shoot for a certain week when would it be? Thanks

I would say toward the very end of october is a little more of a gamble because everything could freeze, but you could also run into some awesome hunting. A week or two earlier will be safer, but with less chance of running into thousands of migrators. Get into November and I think a lot of land is taken up by deer hunters.

Just based on the waterfowling notes I have kept the past 10 years to help me in planning my trips back to ND, for the past 4 the best week as far as the migration goes has been that last week of October. Like Sifty, I am planning for around Oct. 23-26 this year.

About 4 years ago while I was living in SD I took a week off from work to head back home (north-central ND) for a friend's wedding, which was on Oct. 30 that year. That year it was right in the prime of the migration. We had these 3 days of thick soupy fog. Had the birds pinned down in it. One afternoon I got my 6 ducks (5 greenheads and a nice drake widgeon) on 7 shots in about 10 minutes on one of our setups. Probably didn't even need decoys. We were where they wanted to be and they would just appear out of nowhere (15-20 yard shots the whole shoot). The best duck hunt I have ever had. Even beat hunting the flooded corn in South Dakota!!

The last few years pressure seems to be higher early season and trips in the "in between time" run the risk of encountering spooky educated local birds.

I like either as early as possible to hunt uneducated local birds, no big concentrations often a mixture of species. GREAT for a young dog or hunter hunt a few hours see lots of birds.

OR waiting as late as possible to hunt the big push or a portion of it. These flocks are often much more concentrated and species specific requiring more scouting but payingoff huge when you get it right. Often you have to work to get on the spot and conditions can be ROUGH with lots of ice, wind, and snow. If your just off spot you may be watching a big show but not bagging any birds.

    • As a recovering machinist, I can appreciate that.  If the spec is 0.001 - 0.0015, then clearly the correct measurement is 0.00125, duh…
    • I just figured that it is easy enough to just get a 3 bank so when the boat is not in use I can keep all 3 batteries charged. I have not bough a charger yet, maybe I will give it some more thought. Edit: After thinking this over, with the size, weight, and heat output of the charger (as well as the cost) I think it makes sense to just buy a 2 bank charger, I have a smaller charger i can use on the starting battery when the boat is sitting at home. Forgive me, for i am a retired engineer and I have to obsess over everything...
    • Congrats on the motor!  I think you’ll like it.   I can’t say much on the charger location but I’ve seen them under the lid in back compartments and under center rod lockers.  160 degrees is more than I expected to hear.   Curious why you’re opting for a 3 bank charger with a 24V trolling motor.  Unless you don’t feel you be running you big motor enough to keep that battery up as well?
    • I did buy an Minnkota Ulterra, thanks for the recommendations. I had a bunch of Cabela"s bucks saved up, which helped. Now i need to get an onboard battery charger. Where do you guys mount these things in your boat? The manufacturer I am looking at {Noco genius) says tht their 3-bank charger will run at 160 degrees, seems like a lot of heat in an enclosed compartment? Thanks for any input on this.
    • You're very lucky a troop of Sea Monkey's didn't carry you away.
    • Wasn't terrible at a state park beach. Antelope island maybe.  I wouldn't recommend it as a beach destination tho.  Figured I was there, I'm getting in it.
    • The water looked and smelled disgusting with hundreds of thousands of birds sh*tting in there.  About as gross as the Salton Sea. When I duck hunted there I didn't even want to touch the water.
    • It's kinda gross with the algae in the summer but I got in it anyway.  Wanted to see the increased bouyancy at work.  You can kinda tuck yourself into a ball and you'll just float with your head above water.  When dry off you look diamond encrusted with the salt.
    • We went to the flats too. I dipped a tire on the rental car onto it just to say I’ve been there, but it was still pretty soft from winter melt. After seeing some moron in a BMW suv get dragged out of the muck I had no intention of repeating his stupidity.
    • I've been out on the flats. It's like being on a different planet
