Rust bubbles in paint....what to do about it?

Recommended Posts

I detailed my 03' Dodge Ram yesterday and found two small areas where the paint is bubbling up on the edge of one of the rear wheel wells. One of the areas looks a little worse than the other and t actually bulging the metal apart a little.

I called line-x and they said it wont stop issues that have already started and it usually starts from the inside of the wheel well and works it way out.

Is there anything I can do to stop or treat this? I plan on keeping this truck for a long time...so I would hope to do something about it vs replacing the bed sometime in the future.

You need a GOOD body shop. They will be able to weld in a patch and paint it for you. Unfortunately once it starts it will eventually come back...even if rust is cut out and replaced with a metal patch. Just a price you pay for living in MN. Should not cost more than 500.00 to fix what you are describing.

I agree. Bring it to a good bodyshop. It's more than a defect in the paint. The metal under the paint is starting to go. There are lots of "band-aid" approaches to repair this. Unfortunately the only real way is to replace the metal.

As an after thought...Your vehicle has a 5 yr/100,000 mile corrosion warranty that could cover this. It may still be in effect depending on the in service date of your truck though not likely as it's a 2003. Might be worth checking. Whether the "New' Chrysler is going to honor the old warranties is another story...
