Lake Trout - Canadian Shield Lakes

Does anyone have any experience with open water fishing for lakers on the deep clear MN/Canada border water lakes? What techniques might work - live vs artificial baits? I've fished for these critters a couple of times with limited success but I'm confident that we've been on fish as we mark them on the graph. Any info would be great!

When will you be fishing here? We've had good success early in the spring right when the season opens and the ice is off of trolling along the cliffs long lining Large Shadraps or Rogues, or just about any other quality trolling crankbait.

I'll be fishing up that way the second half of next week. When long lining your raps, are you using downriggers?

We generally wouldn't use downriggers. We would use 4lb dia. Fireline so it would really cut threw the water we would usually have about 100-200feet of line out. Generally the fish were from 10-20' so dependent on the amount of line those larger #9 shadraps would get down there and in the fishes field of view.
