Fishing near University of La Crosse?

We're heading down to visit some family and will have early Saturday morning to fish. I think we want to try the river, but have no clue where to start!!! Unfortunately we will not have a boat on this trip so we'll be fishing from shore, dams, piers, etc. I know this is short notice, but where should we start or who can we call down there to get some info? Any specific landmarkers or any other signs would be helpful, thanks!!!!
