I/O oil slick

Recommended Posts

Buddy has a cruising boat with a 225 Mercruiser I/O and when he pulled it out of the garage he noticed a fairly large puddle of green fluid under the engine area on the floor. He had the engine trimmed all the way down and it was sitting there for about two days but can't find any place where it may have been leaking and it appeared to be gear oil. He said tonight that he trimmed the motor back down but didn't see a drop, just water from the last time he was out. It also has a reservoir for gear oil he said. ???? If the gear oil ran out of the lower unit, wouldn't the oil reservoir be empty as well?

I'm not familiar with I/O's at all so I figured I'd see if maybe one of the boat experts has any ideas.

Green fluid? Quicksilver HP gearlube is green. It could come from the upperdrive shaft seal, propshaft seal, lower driveshaft seal, shift rod bushing and there is even a small quad ring where the upper and lower gearcase come together, sealing the pasage between the two.
