My dad has 1987 40hp Johnson that he just bought. Im a mercury guy so this seems kinda odd to me but there is alot of steam that comes out of the exaust above water is that normal? is it something to worry about I just replace the water pump in it this last weekend.

Have you felt the top of the cylinder head? is it hot? I'd want to make sure it's not overheating by checking the actual temp. I use a laser type thermometer. A little steam wouldnt seem to odd considering the water temps are still pretty low yet but if you are seeing alot it's worth verifying the temp.
